The Buoy Data Promise

Buoy only works if you trust it with real information — your boat, your renewals, your plans. So here's how we treat that information, in plain English. The formal versions live in Privacy and Terms; this page is the promise they're written to keep.

Your data works for you

Everything we hold — registration dates, insurance, engine hours, your vessel's dimensions — exists to make your boating easier: a reminder before something lapses, a slip request that already knows your boat fits, a service quote you don't have to re-explain. If a piece of information doesn't make your boating life better, we have no business holding it.

Consent comes first

We ask before we use your data for anything beyond running your account, and we ask specifically — renewal reminders, marketing, and aggregate data sharing are each separate choices, not one buried checkbox. When our policies change, we ask again. And when you turn something off, it actually stops: the systems that send those messages check your consent before every send.

We never sell your individual data

No lists, no brokers, no exceptions. Your name, your boat's HIN, your renewal dates, your contact info — none of it is for sale, to anyone, ever. That's not a pricing tier; it's the design of the business.

Advertisers get aggregates — never you

Here's exactly how advertising works on Buoy. A partner can pay to show a message to a segment — say, "boats with insurance expiring in the next 30 days." Buoy does the matching and serves the message; the advertiser never receives your record. Not your name, not your dates, not your boat. The only way an advertiser ever meets you is if you look at their offer and decide to respond.

Export or delete, anytime

Your account page will always include two working buttons: export everything we hold about you in a machine-readable format, and delete your account. Deletion is honored — with the narrow exception of records the law requires us to keep (like payment and tax records), which we retain only as required and anonymize where they must persist.

Hold us to it

If anything Buoy does ever seems to break this promise, tell us and we'll make it right. This page is load-bearing — the whole product is built on it staying true.
